The design of our place is quite unique, and we feel comfortable saying that it is "one of a kind." The design of The Port City Cafe' and Pub is not the cookie-cutter franchise, not that there's anything wrong with that, we just didn't have the loot to get one.
Port City started on a napkin in a small Irish pub in Columbus, which by the way, the resulting design looks nothing like that scratch on the napkin. After many hours of "field research", in many Irish, Scottish, and English pubs, the rough sketch for a coffee house/Irish Pub was born. The finished product is the result of over 15,000 man hours and the encouragement of the local government and people in Portsmouth, who visited us during our construction. The result was Irish, but the undertones are Portsmouth and that alone has made this project fun. Port City has made use of many recycled building materials from our area. For example, the French doors in the front and back are from Grant School, The intricate trim is from the old apartments upstairs, the elevator heading was uncovered directly above where it hangs now, and the leaded glass came from the old river front homes where SSU now sits.
The list goes on and on of the interesting things here, as most everything here is authentic, so let your eyes wander, over a pint you might even spot the books from Mr. Selby's old collection. Either way, Coffee of Whiskey, or both, we welcome you as friends and enjoy our own little bit of an Irish experience.
