Located just outside of Portsmouth is Ohio's crown jewel, Shawnee State Forest. This wonderful forest contains more than 65,000 acres of beautiful hill land. Once the hunting ground for the Shawnee Indians, this region is unlike any other portion in Ohio. With mile after mile of forest, the picturesque land of Shawnee State Forest is only occasionally broken by a path or strip of cultivated soil in the narrow valleys.
